About Our School

Allendale School is one of the oldest public schools in Edmonton and offers some unique and dynamic educational programs for students in Junior High.  Allendale has a smaller population of very successful students making the school much more of a family than larger schools.   Although Allendale is the designated receiving school for Mount Pleasant and McKee - E.T.S. bus routes provide easy access to many communities in southwest Edmonton. Many of our students choose to come to Allendale from many areas of the city.

Our motto at Allendale is “The Small School with Big Opportunities.”  The motto refers to the fact that we are a small school and because of this we are able to get to know students and provide them with very personalized programming.  We seek to provide students with a challenging, enriching, and safe school environment that allow each of them to reach their personal potential.  In the three years that students attend Allendale, they will most likely take courses from fewer teachers than most other junior high students will in a year.alt

Students are expected to do their best in their studies.  At Allendale, we place a strong emphasis on the four academic core subjects of Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies.  Our students consistently achieve higher than the district average on Provincial tests.  To accompany the strong academic program, we also offer a diverse and high quality selection of complementary courses.  Art, Drama, Instrumental Music, Construction, Foods, Career Explorations, Computer Studies and French are options that have been available in past years.

Allendale was the first Junior High school in Edmonton Public Schools to offer the Cogito Academic Alternative program. The program is designed for all students who are willing to work with teachers and parents to develop their capacity for academic excellence.  Many of our Cogito graduates enter into well-known academic programs in high school such as Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (I.B.).  For more information on the Cogito program, visit our web site at:  http://cogito.epsb.ca.

Besides being a founding school for the Cogito academic alternative program, Allendale is the only junior high in Edmonton that offers the German Bilingual program and we are very proud of this fact.  Typically, students from the elementary German Bilingual program at Forest Heights, Rio Terrace and Rideau Park continue their German studies at Allendale.

However, students with a strong background in the German language are welcome to enroll.  The German Bilingual program fosters an appreciation for the culture and language of the German people.  Students in the program will have the opportunity to participate in an exchange trip to Germany while at Allendale.  The program has been a very important part of Allendale School since 1985 and we look forward to continuing the rich tradition of high quality German education.

In addition to a focus on high academic achievement and a broad selection of elective course offerings, Allendale students participate in several inter-school athletic programs including Cross-country running, Volleyball, Basketball, Cheer Team, Soccer, Badminton and Rugby.  In addition, we have a competitive Chess Club and a Darts team.

In short, Allendale School, “The Small School with BIG Opportunities”, offers a high standard of education, lots of elective courses, and the very best in athletics – something for everyone.
